Form 4868: more time to file, not more time to pay.

Taxpayers abroad already get more room than domestic filers, and Form 4868 extends it further. What no extension changes is the payment date — interest runs from April regardless.

Working through US filing extension dates

Three dates worth knowing

15 April is the payment deadline for everyone. Taxpayers living outside the United States get an automatic two-month extension to 15 June to file, claimed simply by attaching a statement to the eventual return. Form 4868 pushes the filing date out to 15 October.

A further discretionary extension to 15 December can be requested in writing, and Form 2350 exists for a different purpose entirely: extending the deadline until you have been abroad long enough to qualify for the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion.

  • 15 April: payment due, interest starts
  • 15 June: automatic filing extension for taxpayers abroad
  • 15 October: extended deadline via Form 4868, FBAR also auto-extends
Deciding whether to extend a US filing

Why extending is often the right call

The UK tax year ends 5 April and its figures firm up over the following months. A US return prepared before the UK position settles frequently has to be amended, so filing in October with correct credits usually beats filing in April with estimated ones.

Extending does not increase audit risk. What does cost money is underpaying in April, so where a balance is likely we estimate it and pay with the extension rather than waiting.

Questions we get about this

Not for the June date - that extension is automatic and claimed with a statement on the return.

You need Form 4868 to go beyond June to 15 October, and it is straightforward to file.

No. Tax is due 15 April regardless, and interest accrues from that date on anything unpaid.

Where a balance is expected, paying an estimate alongside the extension limits both interest and any late-payment penalty.

No - the FBAR extends automatically to 15 October every year without any request.

Nothing needs filing to obtain it, which is one of the few genuinely simple things in this area.

It extends your deadline until you have satisfied the time abroad needed to qualify for the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion - useful in the year you move.

It is a different form for a different purpose, and it is not a general-purpose extension.
