UK Self Assessment, coordinated with your US return.

HMRC's return looks simpler than the IRS's, but the cross-border questions — residence status, foreign income, what the US has already taxed — are where refunds are missed and enquiries start.

Figures on this page are stated for tax year 2025/26 UK · 2025 US. Thresholds change annually.

Modern office where UK returns are prepared

Residence decides everything downstream

The statutory residence test sets whether HMRC taxes your worldwide income or only the UK slice. Arrival and departure years can often be split, and the foreign income and gains regime changes what recent arrivals owe on non-UK income.

We establish your residence position first, then prepare the return so income is reported — and relieved — in the right country under the treaty.

  • Statutory residence test analysis and split-year claims
  • Employment, self-employment, rental and investment pages
  • Foreign tax credit relief for US tax paid
  • Capital gains reporting including 60-day property returns
US and UK specialists working the same file

One file, both authorities

Your Self Assessment is prepared by the same team that prepares your US return, so each filing knows what the other claimed. Reliefs land in the right order and the same income never pays tax twice.

The payment cycle, managed ahead of the deadlines

UK tax runs on its own rhythm: 31 January closes the filing window and opens payments on account, 31 July collects the second instalment, and a residential property sale demands its own return within 60 days of completion.

We prepare returns well before the January crush, tell you both instalment amounts months in advance, and reduce payments on account when the coming year justifies it — so nothing about the UK side ever arrives as a surprise.

Questions we get about this

HMRC charges an automatic penalty once the deadline passes, and it escalates the longer a return stays outstanding, with interest on any tax due.

Where there is a genuine reason for the delay, reasonable excuse relief exists, but it has to be claimed rather than assumed.

If you are UK resident and taxed on the arising basis, yes - worldwide income goes on the return, with credit for foreign tax paid.

How much detail is needed depends on the type of income, and US-source income in particular needs the treaty position handled correctly.

Yes, where you expect the coming year's liability to be lower. It is a formal claim rather than simply paying less.

Getting it wrong in the other direction attracts interest, so it is worth basing on a real forecast rather than optimism.

Not everyone does. If all your UK income runs through PAYE and nothing else is going on, you may have no filing requirement at all.

You generally will need to file with self-employment or rental income, untaxed foreign income, capital gains to report, higher-rate liability, or where HMRC has issued you a notice to file.

The online filing deadline is 31 January following the end of the tax year, which runs 6 April to 5 April. Paper returns are due by the preceding 31 October.

Payments on account, where they apply, fall due on 31 January and 31 July. We work well ahead of these rather than against them.

Yes, and where both apply we would rather do exactly that. Figures and timing on the UK return feed directly into the credits claimable on the US side.

Preparing them separately is how people end up paying twice on the same income, or claiming a relief in the country where it is worth less.

Self Assessment due, and a US return too?
